Music and dance festivals
As well as the many one-off concerts, Andalucia has a wealth of music festivals, across a range of styles and genres. These are some of the best-known ones.
Flamenco biennials in Seville, Málaga and Granada
The Seville Biennial has been running since 1980, and it is widely considered the most prestigious flamenco event in the world. It is – as the name suggests – held every two years, and it attracts the biggest names in flamenco. Performances are held in stunning indoor and outdoor venues, including theatres, historic buildings like the Real Alcázar, and on the banks of the River Guadalquivir. Tickets go on sale in April, and there are discounts if you buy early.
Granada held its very first biennial in 2025, and the plan is to hold it on the alternate years when there isn’t a biennial in Seville. Once again the venues include historic buildings like the Alhambra and Sacromonte Abbey, as well as performances in the streets. There is also a biennial in Málaga and other towns in the province.
La Noche Blanca del Flamenco de Córdoba and Festival de Jerez
Since 2008, Córdoba has been attracting well-known flamenco artists to its annual Noche Blanca del Flamenco. It’s an all-night festival held each June at a variety of outdoor venues, including the Mezquita’s orange tree courtyard and the gardens of the Alcázar.
Jerez de la Frontera holds its annual flamenco festival in February-March, also featuring acclaimed artists.
Festival de Musica y Danza de Granada
Granada’s long-running music and dance festival is the leading classical music festival in Andalucia, attracting major orchestras, string quartets and soloists. The concerts are held in June and July in venues across the city, including some at the Alhambra. It’s a magical experience to witness a performance in the Charles V Palace or the Nasrid Palaces, but you do pay for the privilege, and you have to be quick if you want to bag tickets for the most popular concerts. Usually tickets go on sale in April.

Icónica Sevilla Fest
First held in 2021, the Icónica Sevilla Fest is a relatively recent addition to Andalucia’s festival calendar. It consists of a series of concerts at the Plaza de España during June and July, and there are also pop-up bars serving food and drink. It has already managed to attract many international stars, including Deep Purple, Kylie Minogue, Patti Smith, Ricky Martin, The Prodigy and Marc Anthony, as well as many legendary and up-and-coming Spanish artists.
Lorca y Granada en los Jardines del Generalife
Each summer, the theatre in the gardens of the Generalife hosts dance performances inspired by the writings of the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. The shows are usually brilliantly choreographed, in the flamenco style but with a modern twist, and the setting is second to none. The principal dancers and the singers are usually highly respected artists from the world of flamenco. The season runs from mid-July through August, so it’s usually possible to get tickets without needing to book too far ahead. Of course, the heat is often overwhelming at that time of year, so the shows start late at night, and if you’re lucky there’s a pleasant breeze.
Jazz festivals
Jazz is very popular, and there are numerous festivals across Andalucia, including in Cádiz in June, in Vejer de la Frontera in July, in Priego de Córdoba in July/August, in Almuñecar in October, in Zahara de los Atunes in October/November, and in Granada in November.
Starlite Occident (Marbella)
Held at Cantera de Nagüeles, a disused quarry a few kilometres northwest of Marbella’s old town, this boutique festival has been running since 2012. Tens of concerts are held over the course of the summer, and after the concerts, the party continues late into the night with DJs. The festival combines music and gastronomy, with several pop-up gourmet restaurants on site. A wide range of artists have played at Starlite, but the music is mostly relatively mellow. Famous names who have appeared include Andrea Bocelli, Plácido Domingo, Sting, Lenny Kravitz, Lionel Richie, Seal, Steven Tyler and Bryan Adams.
As part of the festival, Antonio Banderas and Sandra García-Sanjuán host a charity evening called Starlite Gala.
Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba
The Córdoba guitar festival in July brings together fine guitarists from all kinds of backgrounds – classical, blues, rock and flamenco. Most performances are held in three of the city’s theatres.
Festival Internacional de Tango de Granada
Tango isn’t something you immediately associate with Spain, but there are strong ties between Argentina and Spain, with large numbers of Spanish people having emigrated to Argentina in late 19th and early 20th centuries, and many Argentinians having come to Spain more recently. Granada’s tango festival, which has been running since 1988, attracts some of the world’s leading tango artists.
